Police are cracking down on the illegal sale of K2 after dozens of people are sent to hospitals across the borough. The synthetic marijuana has caused more than 80 overdoses in Brooklyn, law-enforcement officials said Wednesday.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said there have been 87 confirmed overdose cases in northern Brooklyn since Wednesday. More than 25 people in the area were sent to the hospital with bad reactions from the drug.

“We want to get the word out that there is a dangerous batch of K2 out on the street in Brooklyn” Monahan said. “K2 in and of itself is very dangerous, but what we’re seeing over the last couple of days with 56 confirmed overdoses, there is a very dangerous batch circulating right now in Brooklyn.”

When the NYPD first addressed the issue the overdose total was at 56. Recent victims have all experienced similar symptoms, including foaming at the mouth. Officials are also reportedly testing the drug to see the exact chemical harmful to humans.

“The chemical balances and how it’s manufactured are very dangerous,” said New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea. “We don’t normally see individuals like this passing out going to the hospital in these great numbers.”

Police have made 13 arrest over the weekend and are currently investigating the specific source of the synthetic drug distribution. They are urging locals not to use the drug and asks anyone who witnesses an overdose happening to call 911.
