An undocumented immigrant trying to make a living gets unexpected taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Pablo Villavicencio, 32, a pizza delivery man, was fulfilling an order at Fort Hamilton military base when an officer on duty asked him for valid identification, first reports Spanish-language newspaper El Diario. Villavicencio showed his New York municipal ID, which he had previously done on deliveries there, but this time the soldier on duty called immigration officials to arrest him. Villavicencio, who’s green card application status is currently pending, was sent to an immigration jail in Manhattan.
Villavicencio’s wife, Sandra Chica and their two children are U.S. citizens.
“There are not words that can describe the drama that my daughters and I are living. In one moment, life changed for us. All I ask now is: do not deport my husband. Give him a chance,” said Chica to El Diario; translated by Splinter News. “For God’s sake, what’s happening? How is it possible that now, in New York City, soldiers are changing their role to that of intermediaries for immigration agents?”
Bay Ridge Councilman Justin Brannan and Villavicencio’s family are here at Fort Hamilton. Councilman Brannan says Villavicencio used his New York State ID to enter the base, as he always had in the past, delivering pizza from Queens. “What was different this time?” Brannan asked. pic.twitter.com/yY3pHHlyIL

A statement from Fort Hamilton Public Affairs Office says security officers discovered an active ICE warrant during a routine background check. The statement further note that installation’s commanders are authorized to take “reasonably necessary and lawful measures [to] protect installation personnel and property.”
According to ICE spokeswoman Rachael Yong Yow, Villavicencio was ordered to leave the country by an immigration judge in 2010, but remained in the U.S. ICE. Yow confirms he will remain in the agency’s custody pending deportation.
While New York remains a sanctuary city undocumented immigrants still run the risk of being arrested and deported.
“As a sanctuary city we need to be clear to federal locations about what it is they require, so we can inform businesses,” says Borough President Eric L. Adams in a press conference. “There shouldn’t be a surprise as there was here.”
BP Adams (D) and City Council Member Justin Brannan (D) — who both represent Fort Hamilton — along with fellow activist are calling for Villavicencio’s release and a full investigation of the military base for collaborating with ICE.
