Meadowsweet, a Mediterranean restaurant located at 149 Broadway in Williamsburg, has eliminated tips and will instead pay their servers $27 per hour. Kitchen workers will continue to earn around $13 an hour and overtime at first then eventually will make more. Customers will also pay a few dollars extra to support the employees pay raise, as menu prices have been marked up 20%.

“The goal is over the next couple of years, we can raise the income of every back-of-the-house employee,” Stephanie Lempert, general manager and owner of Meadowsweet, told Pix11. “We wanted to run the restaurant moving forward in a way that all our employees can benefit more financially.”
Meadowsweet follows the steps of several New York City restaurants that have eliminated gratuities including Eleven Madison Park, Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern and Joe’s Crab Shack will soon begin testing a few of their restaurants soon.
