North Brooklyn just got a little less witchy – at least temporarily.  The neighborhood’s well-known occult bookstore, Catland, was just shut down by the New York City Fire Department.

With a storefront that gives its shoppers close proximity to the Kings County Coven and others similar groups, Catland (for those who don’t frequent its East Williamsburg location) bills itself as “Brooklyn’s premier metaphysical boutique and event space.” The store specializes in “practical magical tools, magical texts, local art & publications, and high quality talismanic texts.” They also have an event space where they host events and classes like Witchcraft 101 and Tinder Witchcraft: Love Magic for the Modern Age.

While it would have been great PR if something supernatural had caused the closure, the closure was actually ordered after a routine monthly inspection administered by the FDNY. During the inspection, the FDNY found that the store was operating without sprinklers and additional fire protections – including a second exit.

Catland’s owner, Melissa Madara, told Bushwick Daily that she’s not concerned about the necessary updates.

“In the wake of the Ghost Ship tragedy out west, we appreciate that the FDNY is finally making efforts to protect artists and craftspeople from dangerous situations.”

Madara is referring to the Ghost Ship Fire in Oakland, CA earlier this month.  The Ghost Ship was an unregulated warehouse space where artists, at-risk youth, and others spent time. During an electronic music performance, the Ghost Ship caught fire and killed 36 people.  With the number of warehouses in Brooklyn, it will be interesting to see how regulation enforement becomes stricter.

Catland is located at 987 Flushing Avenue. If you can’t wait for the re-opening, their online store has eliminated shipping fees until the start of 2017.
