“All I see is fireworks!” 4th of July was big in the borough of Brooklyn. From the traditional Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest to the mass Macy’s firework spectacular on the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a beautiful day, despite the on and off rain, to celebrate America’s Independence Day.
I can’t imagine eating more than two hotdogs in an hour but every year contestants of the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest in Coney island scarf down a number of wieners in a matter of minutes. The reigning champ, Joey Chestnut, went for his eighth win against two competitors, Matt Stonie and Tim Janus. Before the tournament began Joey had something up his sleeve.
He proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Neslie Ricasa and she said Yes! That gave him all the ammunition he needed to complete and win the contest having downed 61 hotdogs a few short of his normal 69, to take home his eighth belt.
Later in the day, people lined up all over Brooklyn to catch a glimpse of the Macy’s annual 4th of July firework spectacular’s return to the east river since 2008. the beautiful 25 minutes of color explosions where performed between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and some from the Brooklyn Bridge itself. Macy’s brought about 50,000 pounds of fireworks and boy did it deliver! The theme for this year’s show was the 200th Anniversary of “The Star Spangled Banner” and the star of this years show was the lights shining off of the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge.

Despite the rainy start of the day, the weather managed to hold up for the beautiful fireworks and live performances from Ariana Grande and Enrique Iglesias with Sean Paul. The millions of people who came out or watched on their TV screens were in awe of the beauty and are now speaking up for Macy’s to continue the 4th of July tradition next year on the east side.
