A Greenpoint man honors his friend’s memory and pays it forward by helping neighborhood children with their skateboard dreams.

Richard Oates a 32-year-old and father of two, was working as a chef at Freeman’s restaurant as well as the owner of the East River Skate shop along with his wife at the time of his death. According to officials, the unfortunate incident happened to Oates while skateboarding on the Lower East Side on January 12 around 1 p.m., Oates was hanging on to the back of a truck, lost his balance and slipped under its rear tires. The news of his death spread through the skateboard community quickly. After this tragic accident, Jad Allen-Magaziner, Oates friend, decided that he did not have the heart to close East River Skate Shop, the store his friend owned. “I didn’t want the shop to close its doors,” said Magaziner. I have spoken to him enough to understand what he wanted the store to do.” An easy transition for Magaziner because of his close ties with the skateboard community. His reasons for keeping the shop open is towards the benefit of Oates two sons so that they can see what their father has accomplished.

“I wanted to be able to keep the store in order to pass it on to Oates two young sons,” said Magaziner.

“There is going to be a point where they’re going to come in and they’re going to be men. That’s going to be nice to see and they’ll be able to see what their dad did here,” said Magaziner.

In the future, the East River Skate Shop would like to open up a community skate park to ensure that the children have a safe place to skate.
