“Today in America we have enormous problems. They are solvable problems. This country belongs to ALL of us. We want to make policy that improves the lives of ALL of our people. That’s how we transform America,” contends Brooklynite Bernie Sanders, a 2016 United States Democratic Presidential Candidate.
Sanders was born on September 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended James Madison High School in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn (James Madison was the 4th U.S. President, by the way) He also attended Brooklyn College, a senior college of the City University of New York.
After college, Sanders moved to Vermont and was elected mayor of Burlington in 1981. He served as congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives and is currently serving his second term in the U.S. Senate. On the presidential campaign trail, Sanders is drawing crowds while bravely speaking truth to power.
During a Democratic Presidential debate, live via CNN, when asked, do black lives matter or do all lives matter, Bernie Sanders, without hesitation said, “Black Lives Matter!”
“And the reason those words matter is the African American community knows that on any given day some innocent person like Sandra Bland can get into a car and then three days later she’s going to end up dead in jail or their kids are going to get shot – we need to combat institutional racism from top to bottom and we need major, major reforms in a broken criminal justice system in which we have more people in jail than China.”
China’s population is 1.4 billion and 1.5 million are in prison while the population of the USA is only 317 million yet 2.1 million are in prison.
