Pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen bring their encouraging message of hope to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center today, Friday, October 16, 2015. This will be “A Night of Hope,” with diverse groups of people coming together in fellowship during two worship and praise services, one at 2:30 PM and another at 7:30 PM. The Osteens are enthusiastically bringing encouragement to a world that desperately needs it.

Turn on the news these days, and one is bombarded with stories of drug abuse, violence, poverty, homelessness, despair, loneliness, depression, and hunger. People are hungry for the word. And Osteen’s message is simple,”God cares deeply for each of us and empowers us to overcome and succeed.” The pastor also gets to the point in his new book, “The Power Of I Am” on calling positivity over your life.

We caught up with the pastor on one of his book tour stops in Long Island and he talked to us about how excited he was to come to Barclays Center — Osteen’s first time ever preaching in Brooklyn. So we took this opportunity to ask him just a few questions.

OBKS: What is the greatest need in the church today here in New York and how do we excite our children and get them involved in church and ministry?

Joel Osteen: You know the greatest need—I don’t know what the greatest need would be but I think a need is for us to reach out to people that are not like us and make the gospel practical and relevant. I think that’s why our ministry has grown.

And how do we get our children excited? I think part of it is by living by example. When we are excited about the Lord and excited about others, I think that’s contagious as well.

(This question refers to Joel Osteen’s new book, “The Power Of I Am: Two Words That Will Change Your Life Today”) What “I Am” confirmation do you use the most?

I don’t know if there’s one I use the most because I use – I am strong, I am blessed, I am healthy, and I usually use them together. I think, I am blessed is a great one.

Through life’s temptations and struggles, how do you keep smiling?

You know, I’m a grateful person. I try to remember what God has done for me. You know, I think all of us can find something to be grateful for. And whether you have a lot or a little or even in difficult times, you may not have a job but you have have your health. So have the right perspective and smile. To me, smiling is an act of faith. You don’t always feel like it, but do it and bring honor to God.

We look forward to hearing his message and being a part of “A Night Of Hope” tonight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. And just incase you can’t be there, stay tuned as we’ll have a full recap of the service.
