Now that the results are in, remember the electoral process does not end at the polls. Our work has just begun. Don’t complain – take action! Believe strongly that you can make a difference in your neighborhood. Robert F. Kennedy said, “The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better.” Therefore, educate yourself on community planning, urban policy, and zoning. Start a block or resident association or revitalize an existing one. Regularly attend community board meetings and voice your opinion. Hold politicians accountable. Know their names and how to contact them. Visit them, call them, send them an email, and volunteer to work on a committee or project. Prepare yourself to run for office if you strongly believe you can make a difference.
