A terrifying dollar van commute was caught on camera as the driver tried to escape from police earlier this month. The high speed chase began after police saw the driver run a red light on December 3. The driver was recorded recklessly speeding through streets in Flatbush with police sirens ringing in the background.

The video, now viral with well over 1 million views, shows passengers begging the driver to stop the van as they bounced around the car. After a while the driver does stop the van and tries to escape on foot.

“There were people being held hostage and screaming for their lives being held hostage, and fortunately it did not end in tragedy,” Hector Ricketts, president of the Commuter Van Association of New York, told Pix11.

Ricketts says that illegal commuter vans have posed a danger to the public for years in New York City, and drivers operating without a proper commuter van license now face more risk if they’re caught. Recent law changes have increased fines to upwards of $2000 and illegal commuter vans risk more trouble if they are caught.

“It’s terrible, imagine being on that bus and how much danger you feel like your life is,” said City Council Member Jumaane Williams. Williams helped make it easier for commuter vans to obtain licenses back in 2017.

“We have now created a way for you to be able to provide this service in a way that’s responsible for everyone,” Williams said.

If passengers are wondering how to tell a licensed driver from one who is not, a licensed commuter van will have a valid company name, livery license plates, and TLC stickers.

The driver remains on the loose.
