Educator Nadia Lopez, Principal of the Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, is progressive, passionate, and driven. She is known to work as late as midnight ensuring the success of her 6, 7, and 8th grade scholars. So it comes as no surprise, Lopez would be selected as one of fifty international finalists for the prestigious 2016 Global Teacher Prize.

The annual one million dollar award, which is informally known as the Nobel Peace Prize of Education, honors the outstanding contributions of exceptional teachers. The Varkey Foundation established the Prize in 2014 to encourage children to become great teachers. Students say, Nadia Lopez is not only a great teacher, but an exceptional person.

When Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York stopped Vidal Chastanet, an eighth-grader attending the academy, Chastanet said Lopez was the most influential person in his life. His answer inspired Stanton to start raising funds to send Lopez’s scholars to Harvard. The campaigned raised $1.4 million dollars in three weeks.

Lopez believes, that in a high risk needs area like Brownsville, students have to experience different places; they need to visit Historically Black Colleges and Ivy League Schools. “Here we are saving lives from going to prison. 32% of students don’t go on to high school and that is unacceptable in Brooklyn. All I want to do is help kids.”

Before the winner is announced in March 2016 in Dubai, only 10 will be selected from the 50 finalists. For Lopez to get to the final 10 she must show her impact and influence on education.
