Born in Guyana, Kelly Hyles, then moved to Brooklyn back in 2009 at the tender age of 11, according to Daily Mail, is now living her dreams.

Hyles was brought to America by her mother, Anetta, who wanted her children to have better life opportunities. While Anettea worked two jobs — 15 hours a day — to support her children, Kelly traveled an hour and a half by train to the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, one of New York City’s specialized high schools in upper Manhattan. Kelly, who was diligent in waking herself up everyday at 5:30am to get to school on time, took her education seriously as she didn’t think school ended when classes let out, but would attend after-school tutoring to keep her grades up and travel to Mount Sinai hospital where she volunteered in one of their biology labs.

Working extremely hard, Kelly achieved a remarkable 99.63 GPA acing nearly every test and graduating as valedictorian.

Kelly’s achievements wouldn’t stop there as she’s been accepted to Harvard, Yale, Brown, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania — all 8 Ivy League schools — along with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, and New York University amongst others. Stanford has placed her on their waiting list.

“I’m still in disbelief. I am so grateful,” Kelly told People.

Though an obvious scholar, Kelly has been upfront about her struggles and her need for tutoring.

“The biggest part of my achievements is realizing that I’m only human and I’m going to make mistakes, but it’s how I handle those mistakes and how I handle the obstacles that I face that will determine whether or not I’m successful in life. So I just needed to realize that I’m human, go to tutoring, reach out to my teachers and stay faithful,” Kelly tells Pix11 in a recent interview.

Kelly has already received a scholarship from Guyanese Girls Rock — the first ever to be given — back on April 10th, at the “Bridging the Gap” Millennial Conference in Brooklyn.

Kelly plans to visit each University before making her final decision but has been reportedly leaning towards Harvard. Kelly’s ultimate goal is to become a neurosurgeon.
