Where the Brooklyn Nets at? As of today, not in a very good place.

Last night the Brooklyn Nets lost to their Atlantic Division rivals, the Toronto Raptors 89-105, which dropped Brooklyn’s season record to 10-14. It’s not the worst record any team could have, especially in the Eastern Conference, but the last thing this team needs to do is inch closer and closer to a 10-21 record like they had last year before ultimately turning things around at the start of the New Year.

This year the Nets have the following teams remaining before the New Year arrives: The Cavaliers, Pistons, Nuggets, Celtics, Pacers, Kings, and Chicago. Brooklyn has beaten only 1 team with a record above .500 which came against the NBA reigning and defending champions, the San Antonio Spurs. If the Nets history follows them to close the year, they could have a record of 14-17. Again, it’s not 10-21 but it’s not a drastic improvement either. With Toronto seemingly running away with the Atlantic Division title and trade rumors all but denied, Brooklyn will probably make some changes that will shake its very foundation; the foundation of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez.

It’s no secret that 1 or 2 of these guys might be on their way out. My prediction is that the short straws will draw Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson. If you look at what Brooklyn has done with these recent trades, acquisitions, and lineup changes, they are going for a younger, quicker, and more move the ball type of offense. Unfortunately, Brook Lopez does not fit that bill. Lopez’s injuries have derailed him from making substantive progress in the rebounding, assist, and defensive departments. His offensive however, is nothing to joke about because he can get it done in a bevy of ways. But the Nets need to see if his negative outweighs his positives or vice- versa.

Mason Plumlee has replaced Lopez due to injury and is playing the way Head Coach Lionel Hollins needs a center to play. Plumlee is now a double-double machine if he’s not the leading scorer. If Plumlee could just hit free throws, Brook Lopez would probably be out sooner rather than later. With Lopez being injured and The Charlotte Hornets having a second crack at Lopez and wanting to trade Lance Stephenson away, this could be the opportunity that Brooklyn needs to add some more offense, more defense, and more excitement to the team and I predict that the deal will be done before the year is up.

In Joe Johnson’s case, besides the Nets wanting to retool the team, they also want to dump salary cap space and finally be out of the luxury tax situation. Joe Johnson is then the immediate target. There are not a lot of teams who are equipped to take Johnson’s $23 million plus contract which make it difficult but not impossible to trade him. Philadelphia and Charlotte again can be suitors for Johnson’s services. Philadelphia definitely has the cap space to do it but Charlotte doesn’t seem to mind taking on 1 or 2 heavily loaded contracts if it makes them better and a playoff contender because right now they are eons away from that happening. What Brooklyn would get in return besides their lightest salary since coming to Brooklyn is up in the air at this point.

Brooklyn is looking to build something that gels the way Lionel Hollins wants the team to. He knows what he’s doing but he needs the right players to do it.
