According to the U.S. Census Bureau the population in Brooklyn is 2.592 million people. It’s fair to say that a large number of people rely on the public transportation to get them to their destination. With that being said, how reliable is the mass transit system?

Brooklyn has approximately 55 MTA buses that serve about every neighborhood in the borough. These buses also help to connect residents that live in areas with a lack of trains, connect to the nearest subway station. However, in some cases it may be easier to walk to your next destination than to wait on the bus. Normally, we see bad weather and expect for public transportation to be a hassle but when no service changes are announced and the buses are still not punctual — this is where we have a problem.

Even with lanes put in place along various routes by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) buses can be momentarily halted by service vehicles making deliveries, taxis and other passenger cars. According  to the NY Daily News, the B35 moves its way down Church avenue at 5.8 mph. A bus moving at such a speed can be frustrating for riders as well as the people waiting at the bus stop.

The B35 earned the Pokey Award of 2015 alongside other outer borough buses for the slowest bus route and the B15 won the Schleppie Award of 2015 for having the most unreliable service — that service percentage being at 26.7 percent.
