A 25-year-old Brooklyn medical student may have found a way to keep thousands of women alive during childbirth. Many women in poor countries that are unable to receive the medical attention quickly enough, die of excessive bleeding during childbirth. Mikail Kamal and his research team, have found out that by blowing up with air or saline water water can put pressure on the uterus to reduce and possibly stop bleeding until the woman is transferred to a hospital where doctors can further help.

As reported by the NYDailyNews:

Postpartum hemorrhaging — excessive bleeding after childbirth — affects more than 14 million women worldwide each year, according to the World Health Organization. It is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the world, and accounts for more than 30% of all maternal deaths in Africa and Asia.

The problem is especially pronounced in Bangladesh, Kamal’s home country, where 70% of women give birth at home assisted by midwives who are ill-equipped to deal with the frequently fatal condition.

Most women in America deliver in hospitals, where doctors have advanced techniques to stem the bleeding.
