If building a Starbucks is the new telling tale of a rapidly changing neighborhood, then Crown Heights is officially on the rise. Yesterday, The New York Times published a story entitled, “Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Gets Its Turn“. It details the immense change of a neighborhood that was once demonized by riots between African-Americans and Hasidic Jews. Now the two work together in what is pretty much the new Crown Heights.

Franklin Avenue years ago is dramatically different than what it is now. Not saying that anything stays the same, but a block that no one was encouraged to walk along is now the home to outdoor dining, beautiful coffee shops, vintage boutiques and some much more to come.

The New York Times writes,

Along Franklin Avenue, signs saying “Moving to Flatbush” have appeared on many businesses in the last couple of years, and while longtime residents don’t tack up signs, there are indications they have also been leaving in large numbers as new arrivals replace them in this community of about 140,000 people.

Much of this change has taken place just in the last two to three years, as developers have descended upon the roughly 65-block northwestern portion of Crown Heights centered around Franklin Avenue. There are more than 1,250 units in about two dozen residential projects planned for the neighborhood, primarily in the area west of Nostrand Avenue and north of Eastern Parkway.

Crown Heights was once the forgotten neighborhood with large families owning these beautiful brownstones on tree lined blocks but also plagued with a rise in crime. Now, in 2014, crime has dramatically decreased and the neighborhood is being taken over by condominiums and large apartment buildings. Large families and small businesses are moving to the less expensive parts of Brooklyn like Flatbush and East New York. In just a couple of years, I’m sure those neighborhoods will change too.

Hope you’re excited about that Starbucks though!
