Oddisee Takes Brooklyn To Another Level At Red Bull Sound Select

Oddisee, born in Washington D.C., is of partial African-American and partial Sudanese decent. You can hear all these different influences in his lyrics and style of music. While OSHUN and Tunji Ige opened up for Oddisee, the long line outside of the event was majorly there to hear his sound. Odisee’s cult following traveled from all states to come and see one of their favorite East Coast rappers.
Oddisee’s crowd was very eclectic and colorful. There’s dreds, Jordans, long blond hair, and cowboy boots. One long time fan from Philly shared: “I’m here just for Oddisee. He’s real. Listen to “Gentrification” for instance…I think he’s one of the best East coast rappers right now. He doesn’t rap about what everyone else is rapping about.”
The song “Gentrification” though written for Oddisee’s hometown and originally released back in 2009, speaks volumes to what is currently happening in Brooklyn. “Mom and pop shops replaced by couture/Starbucks here and a Starbucks there/How much coffee you need/My God it’s unfair,” raps Oddisee. “My city don’t look the same.”
