The Brooklyn Nets came into Barclays Centers looking to continue their playoff push. The Atlanta Hawks wanted the Nets out so they can swap picks with them in the upcoming NBA Draft. The Hawks came into tonight depleted, missing Paul Millsap, John Jenkins, Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic. The latter two players were arrested earlier Wednesday morning. After the last Hawks game, the Nets needed all the help they could get. Even with that, the Nets couldn’t get the win and fell to 8th place in the playoffs.
The Hawks would break open the game with three consecutive buckets giving Atlanta a 6-2 early lead. When the score reached to 17-6 in favor of the Hawks, the Nets needed a time out and took one. It would take the Nets roughly to the end of the quarter to cut the lead to single digits, 31-26. Atlanta managed to get the last second bucket of the quarter to have a lead of 7 points, 33-26.
The Hawks open up the second quarter with an easy bucket. Jarrett Jack, who has been in a shooting slump as of late, decided that he’s going to the free throw if he can get into the paint. Hawks would take another double digit lead, 10, thanks to more Hawks 3 pointers. Joe Johnson finally hit a shot early in the game and it went in cutting the lead to 6, 44-38. Brooklyn went on a run and cut the Hawks lead to just 1, 47-46, on a 12-3 run. Atlanta then immediately got a 6-0 run until Deron Williams hit a 3 pointer, 53-49. The Hawks built the lead back up to double digits on their own 12-3 run. At the end of the first half, the Nets fell to a 9 point deficit, 65-56.
Deron Williams opens up the third period with a bucket in the paint. Al Harford of the Hawks, became the offensive option for the team, almost scoring at will. Nets and Hawks battled back and forth trying to keep and cut the lead. Nets had themselves down 8 in the busy quarter, 79-71. Hawks found themselves back to a 10 point lead that they’ve been comfortable with the entire game. The easy baskets were just too easy for the Hawks. Nets trialed by 12 to close the quarter, 94-82.
Markel Brown busted open the final quarter with a huge 3 pointer. Nets cut the lead to 8 thanks to missed 3 pointers from the Hawks, 99-91. The 3-point party returned to the Hawks to maintain their 10 point lead. Nets found a run within them and cut the lead to 6., 105-99. Joe Johnson cut the lead to 4 with an easy jumper. Hawks scored quickly but Deron Williams hit bucket off the glass to give the Nets the 1 point lead. Al Harford made a huge basket late to put the Hawks up by 1 with 19,1 seconds remaining.
Nets had a chance to tie but couldn’t with a 3 pointer and the Hawks would sweep the Nets for the season and fall to the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference Playoff picture. Final Score 114-111 Nets.
