“Brooklyn girls, when they walk in, they rule the world.” The lyrics from upcoming singer Catey Shaw’s single, “Brooklyn Girls” is pretty spot on, if I do say so myself. The new singer with a unique voice took us on a ride around Bushwhick to distinctly separate “Brooklyn Girls” from the rest of the world. Years ago, singer Katy Perry separate told the world about “California Girls”. While the east coast bumped this tune, we yearned for a song of our own. Pretty cool that someone went with the cool “Brooklyn Girl” rather than the generic song “New York Girl” would have been.
Shaw told Paper Magazine,
I immediately knew I wanted [the video] to be in Brooklyn and I wanted a lot of shots of where I actually lived,” Shaw says. It’s the real Brooklyn! I entertained the idea of finding fashionistas, and making it kind of Sex and the City, but it didn’t serve any kind of new meaning. I think people are thirsting for something more real that they can identify with. Ever since I moved [to Brooklyn], it allowed me to become the person and artist I always wanted to be. When I first moved there after dropping out of school, I finally felt like a real person.Â
The video is real and gritty holding true to the Brooklyn ascetic. Shaw gives us amazing vocals to go with the authentic lyrics.
The song is off of her forthcoming album, The Brooklyn EP to be released on September 9th.
