Whoopi Goldberg, who was born in Chelsea, New York, came to Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, for one night only, Saturday, March 12th, 2016. She was raw, rude, real, and funny as hell. Whoopi (Caryn Elaine Johnson) began her one woman show by telling the audience, “this is not The View, or The Color Purple or any other show I’ve been associated with; this is just for you.”She also added, if language is an issue for you, you might want to “get the f**k out now!”

Click To TweetDressed in a black sweat-shirt with three white circular designs, black leggings, and white sneakers with untied green laces, Whoopi was extremely comfortable and relatable as she talked about politics, sex, and life in general. She meticulously went through each of the presidential candidates, not liking anyone – but Brooklyn’s own, Bernie.
Whoopi at 60 years old, joked about how her body has drastically changed. She became serious as she mentioned her eye sight is impaired now because of Glaucoma. She talked about her brother who passed away of a brain aneurysm last year. He was 65-years-old. Whoopi reminded the audience to get checked if aneurysms run in the family.
She skillfully and calmly handled a heckler in the audience by saying, “I came all the way to Brooklyn to do this show; so let me do it!” Whoopi graciously accepted a tee shirt from a fan in the first row who said she had given her one thirty years ago at a Manhattan show. A true testament that Whoopi’s fans are loyal.

The theatre was filled with a diversity of people: old and young, black and white, male and female, straight and gay, abled and disabled. The audience was seamlessly brought together under one roof by one woman as they laughed and laughed. Bennett Alfred Cerf (a founder of the publishing firm, Random House) said, “the person who can bring the spirit of laughter into a room is indeed blessed;” and that she is.
The highlight of the evening however, occurred towards the end of her show. Whoopi embraced several audience members one-by-one as she entertained a Q&A session. One man wanted to know if she had indeed adopted the blind dog on The View. Whoopi clarified that Bear is both blind and deaf and yes she had adopted him. The man admitted as he watched Whoopi and Bear interact on air – he cried. If you missed this show, you missed an amazing performance.
Though Whoopi said she likes the Kings Theatre, she did not hint that she was coming back soon.
A night of naughty, innocent and unending laughter that made it necessary for this great-grandmother to wait a long time to retrieve my rollator, and on another long, long, line for the ladies room. I laughed so hard and so much I couldn’t trust myself to make it home without making a pit stop! She is so down to earth and fearless – Whoopy is definitely one of my favorite contemporary She-roes – Please come back to Brooklyn soon again – we love you!
