As a Brooklynite, the name of long-time resident and Brooklyn advocate, Talib Kweli, should ring bells and if not, Google should be your best friend. Long-story short, Kweli is a legendary hip-hop artist whose lyrics tend to the conscious of minds. Just think of the time when music had substance, but if that fails you, let’s see if these Kweli lyrics ring any bells:

This morning, I woke up

Feeling brand new and I jumped up

Feeling my highs, and my lows

In my soul, and my goals

Just to stop smoking’, and stop drinkin’

And I’ve been thinkin’ — I’ve got my reasons

Just to get (by), just to get (by)

Just to get (by), just to get (by)

Back in 1997, Kweli and Mos Def — another Brooklyn legend for the record — brought book culture back to the neighborhood. Check this Instagram caption out:

In 1997 myself & my partner in rhyme Mos Def AKA Yasiin Bey poured our rap money into Nkiru Books, Brooklyn’s first black bookstore, where I was also an employee at the time of Black Star’s release. Our community continues to need multicultural education and even though we weren’t able to save Nkiru’s location, we were able to hell it’s legacy thrive. Now in 2015/16 you would be hard pressed to find a bookstore that is not dominated by Eurocentric ideals about what is important culturally and historically. It is because of that I’ve decided to reignite Nkiru Books online.

Humble beginnings are never to be taken lightly!

Kweli expresses his hope to re-launch a physical store for Nkiru Books. Catering to the minds of the young and our elders, what’s life without books and independent learning? I check in on Nkiru Books daily, as Kweli hand picks the books he wishes to sell on his site and his success is amazing. One day he’ll have a full stock of a recently added book and the next it’s sold out.

Talk about catering to your audience.

Sending huge congrats to Talib Kweli and the launch of his online bookstore Nkiru Books, which is part of kweliclub.com. Check it all out here!
