Steiner Studios, the largest US film and television production studio complex outside of Hollywood, has filed a permit application for a new 179,000 square-foot building at its Brooklyn Navy Yard home. The studio that HBO hit shows, “Girls” and “Boardwalk Empire” use as their home base, already sits on 20 acres of land inside the navy yard and is equipped with ten soundstages, totaling 131,000 square feet.

The new three story building would house soundstages along Kent Avenue outfitted with a space for workshops and a cafeteria, the Real Deal reports. The space would also hold additional dressing rooms, hair and makeup rooms and production offices.

“Steiner Studios plays a critical role in New York City’s $1.5 billion film industry, and we are delighted that they will now be doubling their presence at the Brooklyn Navy Yard,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in a statement back in 2007, when the studio was first gearing up for an expansion. “Our City has long been recognized as the world’s leading center of entertainment and creativity, and this expansion will further bolster our unparalleled status as a global center of artistic expression.”

With the rise of filming in Brooklyn, a studio expansion would make sense and not to mention the number of job opportunities it would bring to the Navy Yard.
