Just this year, eight New York City yellow taxi drivers have taken their own lives, presumably due to decline in ridership from the growing popularity in ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, causing those drivers personal financial strains.

On Thursday, Waave — an app approved by the Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) — announced fares into Manhattan during the morning and evening rush hours will be 50 percent off for those who order a yellow cab through the app. The app gives passengers the ability to request rides and get upfront pricing, surge-free pricing and an estimated time of arrival.

The discount is not only to help compete with Uber and Lyft, which were found to outnumber yellow taxis by 4 to 1, but to help taxis travel from the outer boroughs to Manhattan with passengers in their cars.

Waave CEO Daniel Iger says this will insure a better quality of life for both taxi driver and passenger.

“For the first time, taxi drivers won’t be forced to kick off their shifts with a rider-less multi-borough trip, commuters can get into Manhattan quickly and inexpensively, and we can all enjoy the benefits of less crowded streets and subways,” Iger said in a statement.

The discount is available everyday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., including weekends.
