The 23rd Annual Urbanworld Film Festival, along with founding partner HBO, announced the full schedule to its 2019 festival. The showcase of diverse cultural works will run from Wednesday, September 18 through Sunday, September 22, 2019, at AMC Empire 25 (234 W 42nd St.).

The festival features a line-up of over 80 films, documentaries and shorts from creators of color and women. Curated by Jill Newman Productions, opening night on Wednesday, September 18, will kick off with a screening of Focus Features’ highly anticipated film, Harriet. TONY Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo stars in Kasi Lemmons’ biopic about abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

Other notable screenings include: Just Mercy, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, follows the powerful true story of Harvard-educated lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) as he defends a wrongfully convicted man on death row; All Rise directed by Anthony Mandler, is based on the award winning book “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers; and new series First Wives Club set to debut on BET+, BET and Tyler Perry’s new streaming service.

Many of the films and programs will be supplemented by Q&As and panels discussions moderated by and featuring the likes of Jelani Cobb from The New Yorker, Gia Peppers from BET’s Black Coffee Live, actress Yvette Nicole Brown, among others.
