The Annual Cherry Blossom Festival is near. This year above all years! The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is hosting its 33rd annual “Sakura Matsuri” cherry blossom festival on April 26 and 27. The fest’s longtime master of ceremonies and resident sword expert, Yoshi Amao, said this year should be the best one yet! Amao teaches a different version of samurai sword fighting called “Tate”. On both days of the festival Amao and his partner Saori Goda will show off this strategic version of sword fighting.
To make the show entertaining, Amao blends together information with humor to his performance. He understands the people get bored easily with the tradition show, so he creates something to hold the audience’s interest. In recent years, the festival has also incorporated aspects of modern Japanese pop-culture into its festivities. Frome costume and elaborate outfits while a magna artist holds work shops and draws portraits.
