It seems that Mayor Bill de Blasio may have a thing against New York sports teams.

The Brooklyn Nets took to Twitter to address de Blasio who “jokingly” criticized the team’s move to the borough at a town hall meeting in Belle Harbor, Queens on Wednesday evening.

Interrupting an obvious Nets fan wearing a jacket with the team’s logo as he was preparing to ask a question regarding traffic safety, the Mayor said: “I’m from Brooklyn too, but this Brooklyn Nets idea has not been working out as it was planned. So I admire you for sticking with them.”

The joke was shared on Twitter and quickly caused a social media firestorm — even capturing the attention of the Brooklyn Nets.

The local NBA team responded quickly with: “Hello, @NYCMayor. From one Brooklynite to another, you should know that we always have each other’s backs. Like all of NYC, we’re always grinding to get better. If you want to see some real grit, our doors are always open.”

This is not the first time the mayor has written off local sports teams. Back in October, de Blasio publicly stated he would not be rooting for the Yankees during their playoff push.

In 2013 he also addressed New York Jets fans by throwing them a backhanded comment. “I also have a lot of sympathy for Jets fans who have gone through a lot over the years.”

De Blasio’s spokesperson Eric Phillips responded to the Nets and promised to get the mayor out to a game to root for them in person.

“The Mayor’s a fan and rooting for you guys! We’ll find a way to get him to do it in person. #NoBloodNoFoul?,” Phillips wrote.

It may be a little to late for that though, you know, given the Mayor’s track record.
