Police are investigating an attack on a black woman in a Flatbush subway station as a possible hate crime.

On Friday, around 7:30 p.m., 57-year-old Anne Marie Washington told police that as she stepped off the train at Church Avenue, she was approached by a white male who yelled racial slurs and punched her in the mouth.

Washington, a mother of two, later realized she also suffered stab wounds to the chest during the incident. Upon checking herself into the hospital she was told that she needed to undergo surgery.

In a video posted to Instagram, Washington can be seen in complete shock as witnesses recount the story to a police officer.

Today the victim’s family joined Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams outside of the subway station where the incident occurred and urged the MTA to release any images of the the suspect to insure a speedy arrest.

“This is a mother who was assaulted for no other reason but based on what we hear and because of her ethnicity,” said Adams. “That is unacceptable in this community as extremely diverse as it is.”

The suspect fled on a Q train, police say. Washington said he appeared to be in his early 30s, about 5-feet, 3 inches tall and was wearing grey and black sweatpants and a black hooded sweatshirt.

Washington remains in the hospital, recovering from emergency surgery to repair a puncture wound to the shoulder and a collapsed lung.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
