Poet Saeed Jones is joined in conversation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage to celebrate the launch of his new memoir. In How We Fight for Our Lives, Jones shares his story of a young, black, gay man from the South who fights to carve out a place for himself within his family, within his country, and within his own hopes, desires, and fears. The evening’s program opens with a reading by a youth poet from BAM’s Brooklyn Reads program. Following the moderated discussion, the audience is invited to participate in the conversation. A book signing with Jones will follow.

Occasional Evenings: Amadeus

Enjoy BISR’s “Occasional Evenings”—a screening of Amadeus (1984), the Academy Award-winning biopicture that relates the meteoric life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as narrated by his friend, rival, and possible murderer, Antonio Salieri. Before the film, BISR faculty Nathan Shields (whose course Mozart: Music, Enlightenment, and the Sublime starts Monday, October 21st), Ajay Singh Chaudhary, and Rebecca Ariel Porte will discuss the life and work of Mozart; the biopic (why is Amadeus so good, and most other biopics so terrible?); (un)reliable narration; and the questionable concept of “Genius.” Beer, seltzer, and snacks will be served.
