A cool Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn turned out to be a rough one for the Nets as Brooklyn Blue Nights descended on Barclays Center.
The Brooklyn Nets took would take on the Chicago Bulls for the first time with Derrick Rose in the lineup. These teams are certainly no strangers to each other. In the past, they’ve gone the distance in the playoffs as well as battling one another during NBA Christmas specials. This afternoon would be another chapter in their eastern conference history.
Early in the first, both teams displayed their defensive skills in front of the Brooklyn crowd. Both went on runs, going back and forth, taking the lead from each other. Mason Plumlee entered the game before Jerome Jordan and immediately contributed with 5 points. Chicago’s offense showed up and went on a 13-1 run to take 23-15 lead. Alan Anderson hit a buzzer beating 3 to close the quarter down only 3, 25-22.
Second quarter action began with both teams becoming more aggressive on defense and offense. Chicago however, remained in control and managed to gain a 9 point edge over Brooklyn. Brooklyn then took a defensive stand to go on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 3 as Brooklyn’s Backcourt of Joe Johnson and Deron Williams each scored their first field goals for the game. Brooklyn became overly aggressive and continued to send Chicago to the free throw line to expand their lead. Brooklyn did not back down and cut the lead to 5 trailing 47-42 to close the 1st half.
The Big Ticket, Kevin Garnett came out of the half and got two easy shots off to cut the lead to 2. Chicago responded defensively yet again and to go on a 10-0 run. The Bulls got even hotter as D-Rose and company took a 15 point lead, 65-50. Coach Hollins once again inserted an unorthodox line up when both Mason Plumlee and Jerome Jordan took the floor at the same time to cut the lead to 10, 68-58. Brooklyn however, could not keep Chicago from the free throw line as the Bulls went to the line for the 26th time and went 23/28 from the line by the end of the third.
4th quarter action got under way as the Nets and Bulls fought on the herringbone-patterned court. The same story in of the each previous quarters hung over into this one as the Bulls continued to find themselves getting points at the free throw line. Brooklyn managed to do the same but couldn’t take advantage. Chicago got hot again shooting 3 pointers to take a 19 point lead as the Brooklyn crowd got agitated and then quiet. As the Bulls lead climbed past 20, the Nets emptied out their bench and let the rest of the 4th play out. Final score Bulls 102, Nets 84. Next, the Nets will take a short trip to Manhattan to take on their rivals, the New York Kicks, on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
