Let us all not forget the “#BringBackOurGirls” movement. Let’s not forget the night, April 14th, 2014, more than 270 schoolgirls at the Chibok boarding school in northeastern Nigeria were kidnapped by the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram.

Mary Mihelic, a Bushwhick artist, is in the process of creating 53 art pieces called the “Running Girl Series”, inspired by the 53 girls that managed to escape from Boko Haram terrorist.

Mihelic’s website describes the series:

The term Boko Haram translated means education is a sin and the group believes that women should not be educated; instead women should be used as cooks or sex slaves. These artworks reflect on war under the guise of religion. Some of them incorporate text art and are setup as a book, symbolizing western education. Others include imagery of the terrorists, churches burning, schoolgirls hiding in the landscape, running shoe treadmarks…

This artwork was made 106 days after the schoolgirls were kidnapped – just when reports started coming in that they are now using some of the young girls as suicide bombers. The text also alludes to the Biblical phrase “I am” as it relates to God and thus, religion being explosive. It references when women get angry and are labelled. And it’s about the explosive moment when the girls who escaped started running.
