Zayden Noel, entering the world at Coney Island Hospital on January 1st, 2016, is America’s first baby of the year.

The 7 pound, 1 ounce bundle of joy was born to Stephanie Diaz “at exactly midnight” according to New York City Health + Hospitals/Coney Island. Noel is the second child Diaz has given birth to at Coney Island hospital.

“Coney Island Hospital is thrilled to have the first NYC Health + Hospitals baby born in 2016,” Coney Island Hospital Executive Director Robert Hughes told Bensonhurst Bean. “We are elated to be part of such a special moment for this family.”

Yet Noel didn’t come without a bit of competition as LIJ Medical Center in Queens announced the birth of a baby boy at the “stroke of midnight.” The baby born to parents Daniella and Eli Malakov will not be named until the baby’s bris next week.

Coney Island Hospital coincidentally delivered the first baby of 2015, when Baby Maxim was born to parents Olena and Vasyl Olenyukh of Sheepshead Bay.
