Here's What Happened At Johnnyswim's Concert Finale In Brooklyn
‘Johnnyswim Live at Rockwood Music Hall’ album cover.

Johnnyswim is one of my younger sister’s favorite bands. She loves them so much that she’s at every NYC concert and she’s even made it to the cover of their latest album “Live at Rockwood Music Hall”. (She’s the one with the bun and the red shirt, though don’t tell her I called her out!). Because my younger sister loves them so much, I get to be the lucky girl to have her buy me a ticket to go with her to Johnnyswim concerts. I also always walk away uplifted after every performance of the husband-and-wife duo; they always make me feel inspired and make me believe in an impenetrable love. It’s such a good feeling and I noticed that Brooklyn felt that same feeling this past Wednesday at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Johnnyswim just happened to finish their two week tour that kicked off in Dallas and ended in Brooklyn. After the CD/DVD release of their live recording at Rockwood Music Hall in February, their love and music honestly has never been more alive.

Performing in Brooklyn just 10 weeks ago, Abner Ramirez (the husband of the duo) finds that there is no place in the world like New York City. He loves performing in NYC, and has a special bond in particular, to Brooklyn. Not only is wife Amanda Sudano’s dad from Brooklyn but her sister’s name is also Brooklyn. Abner recounts a story asking Amanda’s dad, Bruce, “Why doesn’t Brooklyn have a middle name?” Dad responds, “Because her name is Brooklyn!” Well said, Bruce.

Abner and Amanda were just 25-years-old a few years ago working at Starbucks in Nashville, wondering if they could pursue their music dreams. Some people told them that it was too late to pursue music and that they should just settle down. However, there was a day when Abner just looked at Amanda and said, “Let’s go on an adventure.”

Johnnyswim’s song “Take The World” from their album, Diamonds, starts: “We don’t need calligraphy/ To write a fancy story/ Kings and Queens return to thieves /To find what we’ve been holding /You and Me/ We can take the world.” Both biographical and story-telling, Johnnyswim has taken the world now traveling and recording their third album with their son, Joaquin, by their side.

It’s easy to become completely wrapped up in the music at a Johnnyswim concert or even behind closed doors listening to one of their albums. I believe that they are more than just another good-looking husband-and-wife duo creating music. As people, they are completely relatable. They are people that are filled with love, truth, and honesty. They encourage you to dream big and do more by spreading love. Not too different from the Brooklyn way!
