Five New York City dance crews compete against each other, all looking to become the first ever “Best In Brooklyn” step team winner. With 15 minutes a piece each step team will have a chance to stun a panel of right judges. Now that sounds like fun! This competition will be a first for Brooklyn these Brooklyn teams, where fraternity and sorority steppers practice all year round but rarely get the chance to compete.

The organizer of the competition Natasha Lewis (Director of Greek Life at LIU) stated,

“They perform at picnics and events, but to compete and win in Brooklyn would be major. It would mean everything to them. It’s a pride thing. To be the first winners in a Brooklyn competition, that is something they will always have.”

Stepping is a form of dance that was originated in Africa. It’s a dance in which the dancer’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. Though stepping may be performed by an individual, it is generally performed by groups of three or more, often in arrangements that resemble military formations. It is most popular amongst African-American fraternities and sororities dating back from the early 1900s.

Students involved in Greek life from colleges and universities like LIU Brooklyn, Brooklyn College, College of Staten Island and New York City Tech are set to compete in the competition. Although the winner will receive a cash prize and a trophy, they can’t wait to be able to say “My team is the best in Brooklyn!” Or maybe I’m just speaking for them. Ha!

If you are interested in attending, the event will be held at LIU Brooklyn in the Schwartz Gymnasium at 5 pm this Saturday, May 3. Advanced tickets cost $15 and can be purchased online.
