Retired NYPD Chief Honored During Ceremonial Walkout

Gerald Nelson, the Chief of North Brooklyn’s headquarters and a beloved officer, has retired after 41 years with the NYPD.
Nelson began his career in 1973 as a housing officer and decided to retire a few days before his 63rd birthday.
During the ceremonial walkout, Nelson was honored by his fellow colleagues and residents of the neighborhood with cheers and clapping. When asked how he felt about his retirement Nelson said “It’s mixed emotions, of course it’s happy because I’m ending my career, but when you work in the NYPD as long as I did then it’s bittersweet,” he told CBSLocal.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton was also in attendance during the ceremony, where he recognized Nelson for his hard work and dedication and service to the neighborhood by dubbing him as the special commander. Bratton also stated “the community loved him; cops loved him so that tells you everything you need to know about him.”
