Brooklyn doctors say that they believe that infected black males who have sex with men and also women are infecting black women in the city, who now make up 79% of all new HIV cases among Brooklyn women since the year 2011. Doctors are seeking to expand studies on the crisis by focusing on certain neighborhoods like Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Williamsburg, Bushwick and East Flatbush.
“They (referring to young adults) aren’t using condoms. They are being reckless. Our lifestyle is taboo, The first time I got a STD, it was HIV” said a 22 year old man, from Bed-Stuy who contracted HIV at 17.
The education and means to get testing is there, we just all have to be open to receiving it. Make it priority to get tested every six months. You can go to a free health clinic, your regular physician or even take Ora Quick in your own home! There is NO excuse!
