The House of Representatives passed a bill amending the federal criminal code that could allow a person to carry his concealed handgun across state lines. The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 specifies a person who possess a concealed handgun permit in another state is not subject to the federal prohibition on possessing a firearm in a school zone; and may also carry or possess the concealed handgun in federally owned land. With the full support of Trump backed NRA, the bill is headed onto the next step — a deciding vote in the Senate.

Today, thirty-six states have reciprocity laws for concealed carry firearms. For example, permit holders in Florida can legally carry their weapons into Alabama and thirty-four other states. Presently, New York does not honor any other state’s conceal carry permit. Generally, gun laws are restrictive in Brooklyn and at the local level. It seems the larger the population, the stricter the laws are here. In the suburbs, laws are much more permissive. However, this new federal bill would override New York State law.

Firearm usage prematurely stole the precious lives of 38,658 Americans in 2016 — 22,938 took their own life and 14,415 took the life of another. These horrific statistics continue to increase reports Thomas C. Frohlich in his 247WallSt.com post entitled “States With The Most Gun Violence”.

Adam Lankford, professor of Criminal Justice, at the University of Alabama, found that countries with higher rates of gun ownership saw more mass shooters per capita. The United States leads the world – yes the world, in mass shootings.

In spite of America’s devastating and rising carnage and the increasing numbers of peaceful protests for more stringent forms of gun control, there is tremendous resistance among those in power to effectively and significantly reduce the number of violent casualties and mass shootings. Gun-rights activists remind us that they have a constitutional right to bear arms.

“I want to thank Speaker Paul Ryan for his strong support of the Second Amendment, and I urge my colleagues to support this common sense bill to protect law-abiding citizens,” said Congressman Richard Hudson in a  2017 press release. Hudson, the bill’s sponsor, is a Republican representing the 8th District of North Carolina. He is an avid hunter, was named most conservative Member of the House in the 113th Congress by National Journal, and has an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA). Congress passed the bill last year with 231 votes to 198. Click here for the FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL in the House.

Legislators, (elected public servants of the people) like Hudson, must understand, as citizens, we have unalienable rights, that among these are “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Sadly, gun violence continues to steal the lives of thousands of Americans each year. And the results are: traumatized children fear attending school, movie enthusiasts think twice before purchasing tickets to a public film, concert lovers well with anxiety before a show, and parishioners pray unceasingly for safety in their places of worship. This in NOT living!

Statistics show, circulation of more guns does not bring about peace, it only creates more violence. Brooklyn-born Jimmy Kimmel poignantly and tearfully suggested during a monologue that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan and other lawmakers “won’t do anything about this (gun violence) because the NRA has their balls in a money clip.”

“They continue to ignore us,” contends Delaney Tarr, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida. On Saint Valentines Day, a 19-year-old gunman murdered 17 people and wounded 17 others at her high school. Young people there took immediate action by mobilizing and protesting. One month later on National Walkout Day, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, in solidarity, invited students, educators, and allies across New York City to stand up and speak out against gun violence at the #MarchForOurLives and the #NationalSchoolWalkout rally held in Prospect Park.

Brooklynites, while Washington tries to distracts us with more and more Trump-antics, please pay close attention to new proposed bills like the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act; then promptly and loudly let your elected officials know exactly where you stand. Call your senators ahead of the next vote as it’s a matter of life and death.
