Today marks Brooklyn raised legend, Spike Lee’s 57th Birthday! The American film director, whose real name is Née Shelton Jackson Lee, was actually born in Atlanta, Georgia. He then moved to Brooklyn when he was a child. By the age of 20 Spike began making amateur films. He was awarded a Student Academy Award for his graduate thesis project, a 45-minute film Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads in 1983.

Spike Lee continues to create films that delve into thought provoking topics like race, politics and violence. A large portion of his amazing films are inspired by the place he calls home, Brooklyn, NY.

To honor our Brooklyn legend here are a series of photos of Spike throughout the years.
