On Day 5 of Black History Month we recognize Mark Breland.
Mark Breland is the only fighter to win five straight Golden Gloves championships, World Amateur Championships gold medal (1982) and an Olympic gold medal (1984) – a goal he had set for himself. Breland is from Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy – “Do or Die.” Spike Lee says, the term “do or die” simply means “go hard or go home.” Breland knows how to go hard. He entered the pros with a record 110 wins and 1 loss. He seriously trained for success, disciplining both his mind and body.
He got his first pair of gloves at age 7: he also enthusiastically witnessed the full 15-round championship “Fight of the Century.” Young Breland closely observed the two mature and undefeated champs, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, fight to the end for the coveted heavyweight title at the Garden on March 8, 1971. Little did Breland know, that one day, he would be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Professionally, he claimed the WBA world welterweight championship, twice. And at 34 years old and a 35-3-1 pro record – the boxer retired. “Breland should be listed as the No.1 role model for all boxers….He is one of the few fighters who knew when to quit,” writes the Daily News (09/27/2009).
