One man’s trash surely becomes another man’s treasures.
Carlton Scott Sturgill, a Gowanus based artist, planted two bushes onto the Gowanus canal a set of beautiful pinstripe roses made from discarded Ralph Lauren dress shirts. In a collaboration with Arts Gowanus and the Department of Transportation, Sturgill, was inspired by illegal waste left around Brooklyn.
The project which took about four months to complete, specifically found designer shirts from thrift shops and Ebay in size XXXL so that Sturgill wouldn’t have to purchase to many. Each rose bush was made up of 200 roses and took about 20 shirts to create.

Sturgis uses art to explore how one’s ‘persona’ and ‘person’ differ. The artist specifically chose Ralph Lauren because the American designer ‘is the ultimate symbol of persona’.
The roses look insanely real from afar; then once up-close and notice that they are all made of cloth.
Perfect work of art.
