The future of the NBA might be shorter games.
Today the NBA announced the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics will play an exhibition game where the regular 48-minute matchup will be trimmed down four minutes to 44 minutes. The two that go head to head at Barclays Center on October 19th will be examined by the league to observe the flow of the game.
“At our recent coaches’ meeting, we had a discussion about the length of our games, and it was suggested that we consider experimenting with a shorter format,” said NBA President, Basketball Operations Rod Thorn. “After consulting with our Competition Committee, we agreed to allow the Nets and Celtics to play a 44-minute preseason game in order to give us some preliminary data that will help us to further analyze game-time lengths,” the NBA said in an earlier release.

Each quarter will be shortened by one minute, from the standard 12 minutes down to 11. There also will be a reduction in mandatory timeouts in the second and fourth quarters, with each featuring two.
Will this be a change in the long run for the NBA? Time will tell!
