Looks like the Aaliyah biopic is going to happen after all. After actress/singer, Zendaya dropped out of the movie citing difficulties with Aaliyah’s family approval of the production, we were all left wondering if this movie would ever happen. Now that the Brooklyn born singer will be played by Nickelodeon star, Alexandra Shipp, we come to the conclusion that despite Aaliyah’s family not agreeing to the movie, it will move forward.
The latest castings certainly seal the deal. The movie has since casted Missy Elliot, Timbaland  and Damon Dash roles; the three major people in the last parts of her professional life. Missy Elliot and Timberland will be played by Chattrisse Dolabaille and Izaak Smith. While both are new to the acting scene, Smith is not new to TV as he was part of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records Damon Dash, who also was dating Aaliyah at the time of her 2001 plane crash, will be portrayed by Anthony Grant.
Aaliyah’s parents will be played by Rachael Crawford and Sterling Jarvis. Aaliyah’s brother Rashad will be portrayed at different ages by A.J. Saudin and Jesse Sukunda and Lyriq Bent will play Barry Hankerson, who was both her uncle and the president of her label.
