Ok, cat lovers, this one’s for you. There’s a cafe opening in Fort Greene that will feature cute, furry, loving, adoptable cats — It’s groundbreaking! Well, not really.
While Manhattan has truly been the only location in the New York City area to have running cat cafes, beginning this Saturday — September 19th, The Cat’s Meow, “Brooklyn’s very first cat cafe” will open it’s doors. The shop set to only be open for 5 weeks — until October 24th, will debut tomorrow with a small adoption event from 2 p.m. to 8p.m. outside 354 Myrtle Avenue – corner of Adelphi Street.
Here’s what a cat cafe exactly means; because we know you’re asking. The Cat’s Meow, one of many of its liking, is a small hub for the community where people can go to and meet and adopt a new forever friend as well as grab to-go drinks and snacks for themselves or other humans while grabbing cat food and toys for their new furry animal play-mate. Human snacks are provided by Red Lantern Bicycle Cafe and Brooklyn Sweet Spot; also located in Fort Greene. The cafe will also conduct author readings, movie nights, gallery shows, yoga (so Brooklyn), date nights and of course talks on animals from local veterinarians for pet owners and animal lovers.

While a cat cafe in Brooklyn seems interesting and slightly cute, this might been the most gentrified thing the borough has ever seen. Why can’t we just have a place to adopt cats? We have to have movie night at the same location? I do love the idea of have another place to bring the alarming number of stray cats found every in the borough — too bad it’s only here for a month. Sighhhhh!
Admission to the cafe, open Wednesday through Sunday 11am to 5pm with Friday having later hours at 11am to 8pm, is $5 per half hour, so meet those cats quickly, while children under 3 are permitted in for FREE. If you happen to absolutely love one of the cats you met, the adoption fee is $100, which includes the cost of spaying/neutering, vaccinations and microchipping.
who would pay the rent on a location just housing adoptable cats? events are needed to raise money to support costs as cats don’t pay rent.
