On Day 10 of Black History Month we recognize Deidra “Dee Dee” Roper.
Deidra “Dee Dee” Roper, also known as DJ Spinderella, is a mix master – a trailblazer. She is one of the first and freshest female disc jockeys. Roper is high energy with extensive musical knowledge. “My father was a collector of vinyl records…Growing up in Brooklyn, we lived in the projects, on the seventh floor, (in the Pink Houses of East New York) and we were the loudest apartment music-wise,” Roper tells the Dallas Observer.
Her father introduced her to all types of music; a DJing boyfriend in high school taught her some turntable tricks. And at only 16, Roper joined the hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa – with her parents’ permission, of course. Sandra “Pepa” Denton was 18-years old and Cheryl “Salt” James was 22. Roper became DJ Spinderella adding skills to the hot new group, Salt-N-Pepa. She traveled all around the world and finished high school on tour.
