The day is a time for reflection, for acknowledgment of the divides our country has conquered, and for realizing the steps we still need to take to make our country better. Yes, it’s also a national holiday so you get an extra day to celebrate the weekend, but if you’re looking to spend your time more thoughtfully – here are some ways to celebrate MLK, Jr. Day.
Freedom Songs and Stories with Tammy Hall

Bring your kids to Prospect Park on Monday and listen to acclaimed storyteller Tammy Hall share stories from around the world in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. The event is free, but a $3 donation at the door is suggested.
Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Brooklyn Academy of Music, 30 Lafayette Avenue, 8 AM
The 31st edition of this annual tribute gathers activists and artists from around the country in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Opal Tometi, one of the founders of Black Lives Matter, will serve as the keynote speaker. The Institutional Radio Choir, The Campbell Brothers, and other musicians will join the celebration. Tickets are free and distributed on a first-come, first-seated basis starting at 8 AM.

Many Brooklynites have already signed up for volunteer shifts, but if you’re looking to make a positive impact on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, consider donating your time to a cause that’s important to you.
