Ashley Holt, owner and chief baker of Sugar Monster Sweets in Carroll Gardens, won Best in Show at the annual New York Cake Show this past Sunday.

Holt created a life-size replica of a bright red, over-the-knee, high-heeled, complete with gelatin sequins — a nod to one of Broadway’s most iconic shows, “Kinky Boots.” Holt took about four months to design and create the massive shoe. While the decorations are edible, there’s no cake underneath as in this case, it was meant to be just looked at, not eaten.

Holt took to Instagram to express her joy of winning the top honor. “Beyond humbled and proud of this experience. It’s not just me – that’s the last thing on my mind,” Holt wrote. “I’m proud of my team. I believe competition is so valuable. Push yourself to see what you can do, get out of your comfort zone and see what you’re actually capable of. ”

Beyond humbled and proud of this experience. It’s not just me – that’s the last thing on my mind. I’m proud of my team. I believe competition is so valuable. Push yourself to see what you can do, get out of your comfort zone and see what you’re actually capable of. The orders we get each week are amazing, but as you artists know – they usually aren’t orders that push us to new limits. Competing is vital. Continue to push yourself and encourage those you care for to challenge themselves as well. I am so blessed to have the team I do. When the @nycakeshow announced the 2017 show, without hesitation or their permission, I signed up my team. I told them if they didn’t compete fine, but they’d have to pay me back. There was noticeable stress in their eyes and this made me happy. Never ever settle for where you are technically. Just because you make a beautiful cake doesn’t mean you ‘know it all’. We are all constantly learning. I worked with pastillage for my first time (culinary school drop out) and walked away from this with new skill sets. I feel it’s my duty as a leader and as a boss to pass this off to my team. It’s just who I am. I give to those I love. I am so incredibly proud of @arwenofelves @ryandelfranco for being open to this challenge. They both worked SO HARD and BOTH placed in their division. To me – I believe in first and foremost BEING NICE, appreciate those who work hard for you and passing along knowledge and support to those who want and deserve it. I want to have this team forever but I also want each of them to grow individually. For now and forever – I am so lucky and so grateful. Thank you @lisamansoursnycake for giving us all this outlet to express ourselves and a platform to encourage creativity. It really was an incredible experience for us all. Ryan Del Franco – recent graduate from @johnsonandwales . Our intern turn FT employee – 1st place in his division (celebration cakes – student) Shelby Cedrone – 2nd place in hers (intermediate wedding cake) Ashley Holt – 2nd place in category (show cake) and Best In Show. Each a part of the Sugar Monster team. I am so proud and so lucky ❤️ now order some cakes!!!!!

The show, now in its fifth year, was first started by award winning expert cake designer, Lisa Mansour. With this year’s theme following Broadway, other cakes designs referenced shows including currently open: “Wicked,” ”The Lion King,” ”Beauty and the Beast” and “Phantom of the Opera.” Previous Broadway shows like “Little Shop of Horrors,” had elaborate cake features also.
