Gentrification is happening all over Brooklyn and forcing long-time residents to move out of their homes. It’s now forcing dogs out as well. Unleash Brooklyn located on 216 Franklin Street has until March 31st to find their little best-friends a home. The owner of the Greenpoint rescue and daycare center for pooches, Rob Maher, said he can’t afford to renew his lease. That leaves him less than a week to find new homes for the last three canines he rescued from city shelters. He is currently looking for a home for a bull dog mix, a pit-bull and a “pocket pittie”.

Unleash Brooklyn opened its doors five years ago to give dogs a temporary home and to train them to be suitable for new home. The door will have to be closed due to Maher trying to renew his lease, only to his surprise that his landlord required a “heavy rent increase,” Maher said.

There are three dogs needing new caring and safe homes immediately. Brando, a brawny American Bulldog mix, is about 2 years old and still working on his leash training. George, a 12-month-old Pit-bull, loves to run and play.“He has a lot of energy,” Maher said. “He needs someone who can run with him twice a day. Diamond, a 30-pound “pocket pittie,” is a Hurricane Sandy refugee.“She’s really shy at first,” Maher said. “It takes her a little time to warm up.”

Let’s try to help Rob find these dogs a new home. Its sad when people can’t afford to stay in the area where they planned an amazing establishment. With Brooklyn growing everyday and rents increasing, these small businesses need your help the most.
