CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Signs are down and chairs are can be seen in blue plastic bags through glass windows at the controversial “boozy sandwich shop”, Summerhill. An Summerhill employee tells us via social media that the restaurant is closed and will undergo a rebrand to reopen in February.
You may remember Summerhill, located at 637 Nostrand Avenue when owner, Becca Brennan stirred up controversy in late 2017 after sending out a press release that highlighted the space’s fake “bullet ridden wall” as “cheeky” and “Instagrammable.” The bar also offered 40 Ounce Rosé in brown paper bags as fun “shout outs” to the Crown Heights neighborhood.
Protest of the bar and it’s owner quickly ensued. Brennan sent out an apology to Gothamist and Hello Living — the website the real estate developer of her Crown Heights apartment building — that in short stated her “intention was misinterpreted” and that she “plans to give back to the neighborhood she inhabits by hiring local residents and providing culinary training to those who may not otherwise have access to it.”
Brennan would eventually plaster up the wall and axe the rosé from her menu, but only after numerous protest and the calling for the community to boycott the restaurant went viral. Wallahi Oyo, a 27-year-old black male, who served as the restaurant’s executive chef, became a co-owner shortly after the controversy started.

Locals, who are members of a private Summerhill Facebook group, have noticed the restaurant has been closed for a few days. “Summerhill has been closed several days now and today I noticed the name removed from the outside. Are they out of business? Are they redecorating?,” one Facebook member said.
Request for comment has not been immediately returned by Summerhill owners.
