“With the 29th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets select Chris McCullough from Syracuse University.” Those were the words NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, echoed through Barclays Center and fulfilled a life dream of a young man from the Bronx.
On June 25th, the NBA Draft was held once again in Brooklyn’s Barlcays Center. McCullough actually sat in the stands with a crowd of eager Nets fans directly behind him. They chanted his name before the selection as they had no doubt that the forward from Syracuse was about to become the very first player from New York to play for the Brooklyn Nets. McCullough stated that if he was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets then his goal was to bring a NBA Championship to his hometown. Championship aspirations coming from a rookie is the exact attitude the 20 year old needs to have to be taken seriously in the NBA. McCullough plays the forward position at 6’11, 200 pounds and possesses a 7’3 wingspan. He has a tremendous upside that we all caught glimpses of. You saw his agility, floor activity, defense, and offense that had him averaging 13.2 points, 2.9 blocks, 2.4 steals, and 9.8 rebounds per 40, right before he suffered a devastating torn ACL in his right knee.
McCullough suffered the injury on January 12th, 2015 against Florida State on a fast break and had to be helped off the floor. A player that gave us highlights of nasty dunks as well as a player ESPN viewed as an unanimous lottery pick, had the breaks put on him quickly. The injury and the way it prevented him from performing at his absolute best must have been agonizing. Besides being out for the remainder of the 2014-15 season at Syracuse, McCullough could only be interviewed verbally at the NBA draft combine. He had to sit out of training in Vegas, watch his team play through the summer league, and isn’t likely to see the time on an NBA court until sometime after the season starts. This is not how he envisioned the start to his NBA career but this is indeed how it begins. McCullough however, is not just sitting back and taking in the views. He had to relearn how to walk and now he’s in the gym and rehab centers everyday working on getting his leg back to 100%. He’s hard at work trying to get back on the court as quickly as possible. McCullough has his dreams, hometown, parents, and new family as motivation. Look for him later on this season as he will be they guy with #1 on his jersey.

McCullough will tell you that there was never a Plan B in the works. The NBA was the only path for him. Now thats he’s home, playing for Brooklyn, the sky is the limit. Just remember, if you doubt this man’s attitude, ability, and pride; #THEYSLEEP
