Toni Braxton gets it. When you perform in Brooklyn, the way to get the crowd going, is to show the borough major love.
The 48-year-old R&B icon performed the finale show of GRAMMYPark — a four day music festival full of performances from GRAMMY award winning/nominated artist, thrown by The Recording Academy. The concert live from Kings Theatre was full of energy, legendary Toni Braxton tunes and audience participation and arguably the highlight of the musical weekend.
Soul singer, Andra Day, opened for Braxton and gave an undeniably perfect performance. Known for her chart toping hit “Rise Up,” the young singer came to prove she is more than just a single. “We’re having a conversation tonight, Brooklyn” Day told the crowd, breaking her performance up into sections that boast spirituality and vulnerability and using the music to speak her soul to the audience.
“I came to all the way from Manchester to see Toni Braxton,” one concert go-er told me. Fans came from all around the world for GRAMMYPark but Braxton reworked her show specifically for Brooklyn. The “Unbreak My Heart” singer paid major homage to both Brooklyn icons, Biggie Smalls and Lil’ Kim. Braxton boasted “Oh, you didn’t know I was a rapper,” spat the lines from Biggie’s “Big Poppa” hit to a completely stunned crowd.

Braxton perfected what she could, though clearly upset at her sound team. Her sound pack died a few times and they were no where in sight to help her out but the audience gave her all the help she needed. Fans knew the words to every song and were left completely awe struck by the reality show beauty.
“She came to Brooklyn and showed out for the hometown,” someone yelled out as I left and got into my Uber.
