Why would anyone let good sugar go to waste? I’m sure Kara Walker thought the same thing. Walker is the amazing artist of a three-story female sphinx called “Subtlety (or the Marvelous Sugar Baby)”. The amazing piece of artwork measures a whopping 75-feet long, 35-feet high and 26-feet wide. It’s pretty much the size about the size of a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day balloon. The sphinx took about seven month to construct and is made up of polystyrene, a synthetic resin, and lots and 160,000 pounds of refined sugar.
You can now the sugary spinx at Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It will be on public display from May 10 to July 6th.
The reason for this exhibit? Walker explain’s
“Ruins that evoke time gone by and would echo what’s essentially a modern-day ruin—this factory site. And making something that feels grand and legendary and instantly recognizable, but then turned on its head and repurposed for a new-world audience.”
This will be the last hoo-rah for the Domino Sugar Factory that was built back in 1927. The building will shortly there-after be demolished and replace by apartment buildings.
